Over the centuries successive Mr Hildreths have improved and passed the family business to the next generation and today Richard Hildreth XIII welcomes you to his ironmongery, hardware, fine china, glassware and garden centre, which still remains a family-run business.

Ferne was originally set up in 1945 to take care of animals whose owners were going away to war and so would require a temporary refuge for them. Today it rescues and rehomes dogs, cats, horses, rabbits and other animals. We sell Harper’s Candles in our shop because they look great, smell fabulous and help animals at the same time – truly perfect!

It’s well known for it’s ice cream on hot summery days and coffee on cold wintery days (and probably the odd English summery day to be fair) but we mostly love it for it’s dog called Betty Groak!

This is probably the best cafe around and the meeting place of choice for us at Harper’s Candles – particularly as its dog friendly so Flora can come too! Vegan and vegetarian food that is beyond compare and the quirkiest gifts to boot. Blondes is famous for its cakes and it’s OTT coffees and hot chocolates. Well worth a visit for anyone and everyone.

tAK is a 100% vegan concept store (the first in Belgium). We sell homemade take-away dishes, food products, care- and cleaning products, Harper’s Candles, accessories, like handbags, wallets & pencil cases, and also a little bit of stationary. We chose Harper’s Candles because of the philosophy, the candles smell delicious and burn for hours, the texts are funny and you are amazing ?
TVK is the biggest and the best vegan lifestyle subscription box in the UK and is the only one where every now and again you will find one of our candles. It was born after founder Karris McCulloch spent one too many hours in the supermarket, trawling the aisles and reading ingredient labels to find products suitable for vegans. Frustration at the lack of easily available vegan options prompted the idea to create a box of vegan goodies, not just food and drink, but everything for a vegan lifestyle, shipped straight to your door each month. Just four months and a lot of hard work later, the very first ever TVK box was shipped. Victoria and Karris bonded over a portable air conditioning unit at a Newcastle event (don’t ask) in August 2013 and the rest is history. We simply say no to every other vegan subscription box.
